I Love Your…

“Style. Fit. Look. Taste. Getup. vibe.”

There’s something about the magic of a good compliment. Especially on style. While I don’t dress to please others, I really love when I feel seen and appreciated for the time and creative thought I put into getting dressed.

It feels akin to a social contract. Similar to showing respect or thanking someone for their support in the small moments of life like being handed an item, standing to make room or maneuvering through the grocery aisles. I find it encouraging and a like sparkle in my day. A style compliment is the acknowledgment that I curated a unique look sharing my own sense of aliveness with the world. The style compliment shows me that I am being seen.

(*A quick note that, hopefully it goes without saying, a come-on/pick-up and a sincere compliment are not the same thing).

What does it feel like to be you, in the presence of this artist? We want to be seen, but the only way that can happen is when both are present and alive in their bodies.
— Kellita Maloof, The power of being seen: Burlesque as a healing way home to yourself

It comes as a nod with a smile, snaps, quick comments in passing.

Experiencing the connection with someone in these fleeting moments I also hope that my aliveness, my showing up acts as an invitation for others to join me. Beyond peacocking and one step beyond my own liberation, when I dress with intention and in honor to myself, my extended hope is that everyone around me feels more welcome to be their full self too. That a ripple effect catches on and we all share the tiny joys of life to keep going and growing towards collective freedom.
