Movement & Action
Martha Graham - Lamentation by Barbara Morgan
In style and fashion, movement is an element of construction and vision. The way a form and figure moves, either push/pulling against constriction or accentuated spread/stretching, movement becomes a flavor and experience when wearing a garment.
I’ve long been a fan of dance as an art form, an ephemeral form that plays with language and communication. Body as language, movement as expression. Wordless and highly persuasive.
Style is visual communication. As the silhouette, patterns and textures shift, the playful potential of style as performance, as a lived and embodied art also begin to formulate. A freedom to explore the boundless and boundaried.
“I connect patterns of movement to the patterns of a garment, in order to amplify the link between the body and the space around it. This leads to the exploration and fabrication of set-like structures that serve as extensions of body. ”
With October ending and November just at the tip of our tongues, I’ve been thinking a lot of about movement and action. Literally, as I just moved into a new space and figuratively in the ways I am drawn to explore movement through style and image creation and in witnessing collective movement through the political systems.
In my personal aesthetic this season I’m playing with restricted and minimalistic silhouettes. A feeling of clear containment and boundaries, this edge is where I end and the world begins. No distortions or amplifications with pattern and excess, only clean and direct. Smooth. Perhaps I’m seeking a sense of clarity, control or simplification when the world is so challenging.
As I design my new space I think about the structure that surrounds me, about the movement within space. What will this backdrop of my life reveal? What nuanced effects does it shift? How am I integrating expansive expression with a smooth and simple existence? Where will I dance?
“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”
